What is a Uhaul hitch?
Hitches are used to connect a vehicle such as a trailer or truck bed to the frame of another vehicle. The Uhaul hitch can be attached to your car and allows you to tow things, like boats and cars with ease.
There are different kinds of hitches and the Uhaul hitch is one such kind. The particular type of this hitch fits into a standard two-inch receiver found in cars, trucks, etc. It works by using an anchor plate that attaches to your vehicle’s frame with four bolts for strength and stability. This allows you to tow things like boats, campers, and cars with ease.
A Uhaul hitch can be attached to a truck or car in less than fifteen minutes, which only requires one person for the job. With it being so easy to install, you will have more time to enjoy your trips without worrying about getting lost or hitched up! The best part of all is that when you don’t need it any longer, the Uhaul hitch can be removed just as easily.
This is an important part of any moving process so it’s important that you select one correctly for your needs.
How does it work?
Uhaul hitch work such that one can secure a Uhaul trailer onto the bed of their truck with ease.
A Uhaul hitch works such that one can attach and remove it from their truck quickly, which is ideal for those who frequently use trailers on the road. A Uhaul hitch also affords increased visibility to other drivers on the road as well, by not obstructing their view with a trailer. Like other hitches, a Uhaul hitch works such that it attaches to the truck bed and allows for easy coupling of a trailer onto your vehicle.
In order to have a Uhaul hitch work properly, you need the right tools. People generally recommend that if you’re going to be doing this kind of installation yourself then it’s well worth owning all the necessary equipment beforehand as there is little point in trying to borrow or rent it once everything has already been installed on your vehicle! It may also be useful to know how a Uhaul hitch will work as you’re unlikely to get one installed on your vehicle by anyone else if they can’t see what’s going on!

Uhaul Tow Hitch Installation Process (DIY)
In this guide, we will tell you a step-by-step process on how to install the tow-hitch yourself. Following are the 8 important steps for it:
- Step 1: Read the instructions
- Step 2: Gather your tools
- Step 3: Chock your wheels and jack up your vehicle
- Step 4: Set up a work light
- Step 5: Remove the spare tire, if necessary
- Step 6: Remove bolts, plugs, and other parts, as specified
- Step 7: Position the hitch and attach hardware
- Step 8: Fully tighten the bolts
Step 1: Read the instructions
The first step is to read the instructions carefully and follow them. It will be better if you can watch a tutorial video also along with reading the manual or instruction book that comes up with your tow hitch kit, as it helps in understanding the process well. Make yourself familiarize with the whole process so that you can work with ease and avoid any confusion later on in the middle.
Step 2: Gather your tools
You will need some basic tools to get started with the installation process. These are typically included in your tow hitch kit but they may vary depending upon the type and model of your vehicle. In general, the following tools are required:
- Socket wrench
- Hammer
- Rachet
- Torque Wrench
- Extension bar
- Gloves
- Work Light & more
Step 3: Chock your wheels and jack up your vehicle
Now place your jack, under the vehicle and lift it up. Chock both sides of the rear wheels to make sure that they don’t move while you work underneath the vehicle. Jack is not always necessary, but it is a good idea to have one if you are going to do any work under the car. Take proper precautions, such as applying emergency brakes and stabilizing your wheels using jack stands.
Step 4: Set up a work light
It is necessary to set up a work light near your installation point, as you will be working in dark and backspace. Make a good working environment so that you can easily work, locate and identify the necessary parts and components, remove bolts, plugs, and other parts as specified in your manual, and do not miss out on anything.
Step 5: Remove the spare tire, if necessary
If you have a spare tire mounted on your rear or back, then remove it to make enough room for the hitch. If your vehicle doesn’t have a spare tire or if it’s not mounted to the rear, then you can skip this step. You may also want to lower your exhaust assembly and tailpipe to make room for the hitch.
Step 6: Remove bolts, plugs, and other parts, as specified
In most cases, bolts or rivets are used to prevent installation. Remove these using a socket wrench to mount the hitch frame and then proceed with other parts. Some vehicles may also require heat shields and small panels to be removed and some even require drilling for this purpose.
Step 7: Position the hitch and attach hardware
Now position the hitch frame in place, aligning holes with bolts and securing it using nuts. Use a wrench to tighten all these connections securely. The tow-hitches are heavy so make sure that you are handling it with ease, otherwise, take the assistance of someone else for this purpose.
Step 8: Fully tighten the bolts
It is necessary to tighten all the bolts and nuts that you have used in the installation process. Make sure not to over-tighten them, but also do not use less force than required as it can result in loose fittings later on or even damage your vehicle’s structure. You must take the help of another person for this step if possible so that they can hold the bolts in place while you do this.

How to select the right Uhaul Hitch for your Vehicle
You’ve finally found the vehicle of your dreams. The good news is it came with a great hitch, but what kind? It’s time to read up on how to select the right hitch for your vehicle so you can safely tow your toys behind you.
To get started you will need to know:
- The weight rating of your receiver (this may be listed in the owner’s manual)
- How long do you want/need this hitch to last?
- The total weight of the cargo trailer plus the tongue weight (TW).
- The Maximum TW which is equal to the Trailer Weight minus Tongue Weight.
- The maximum gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of your vehicle or the maximum towing capacity where the GCWR is the greatest amount of weight that a trailer and its cargo can weigh when it is fully loaded, not just what you can legally tow on a single trip.
- The distance from the center of the hitch pinhole to where your ball mount or other accessory attaches to the hitch.
- The dimensions of the part of the hitch that will go over or around your ball mount or accessory.
For example: If I have a Class II, 2″ Hitch, and my ball mount is 1-7/8″, I need to get a Riser so it will fit. If I had a Class III, 2″ Hitch, and my ball mount is 1-7/8″, I need to get a Drop so it will fit.
Adding Customized Hitch to the Vehicle
If you plan on doing any customizing to your vehicles, such as step bars or bed rails, consider these factors when selecting the right hitch for your vehicle:
- How much modification do I want to do? (can I handle drilling into my vehicle, for example?)
- How long do I want this hitch to last? (is this a permanent addition to the vehicle?)
- The amount of clearance between the end of my bumper and where I want to place my step bars or bed rails.
Choose a Class I hitch if:
- You plan on towing infrequently
- You have an unmodified vehicle
- You do not plan on installing any accessories on your bumper (although some drilling may be required for installation)
Choose a Class II hitch if:
- Your towing needs are average, or you want to tow more than occasionally but less than frequently.
- You have moderate modification ability to your vehicle
- You plan on attaching step bars or bed rails to the end of your bumper (most Class II hitches will require some modification)
Choose a Class III hitch if:
- You tow frequently
- Your cargo trailer is fairly large (3-4 horse trailers, for example)
- You want accessories like step bars or bed rails on your bumper (most Class III hitches will require some modification)
- You have an unmodified vehicle
Note: For trailers over 3,500 lbs., use a ball mount rated for at least 1,000 lbs. more than the trailer’s TW to provide adequate breaking strength.
Uhaul normally offer the hitches with a 5-years or 10-years warranty:
- 5 Year Hitch – 5-year warranty; suitable for occasional users or trailers under 2,000 lbs.; little maintenance required by user or installer
- 10 Year Hitch – 10-year warranty; suitable for frequent use and for trailers up to 4,000 lbs.; some maintenance required by user or installer
Note: these numbers can be found on the hitch manufacturer’s website.
