Academy Sports + Outdoors shopping guide: how to save more

Guide last reviewed: September 2026

How to save at Academy Sports + Outdoors: the smartest ways

1. Join myAcademy Rewards first. As of September 2026, the free program gives you $15 off after you join, lowers free shipping to $25, and adds a $15 birthday reward.
2. Use the price match guarantee. Academy says it will beat a qualifying competitor’s price on an identical in-stock item by 5%. Competitors include Amazon and Walmart (not third-party sellers), Dick’s Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, REI, Target and others.
3. Ask for a price adjustment. If an item you bought is advertised for less, purchases within 14 days of your receipt date may be eligible for an adjustment.
4. Watch for printed promo codes. During our review, the homepage promoted a promo code for 20% off select optics (see the offers above). Codes like this are category and brand specific, so read the fine print before you add items to your cart.
5. Shop brand months. In September 2026 Academy is running Brooks Month, including a $25 eGift card with a $150+ Brooks purchase and running shoes under $100.
6. Check the category deals. The homepage listed up to $70 off game cameras, up to $50 off blinds and stands, up to $50 off select optics and up to $20 off Wolverine boots.
7. Consider the myAcademy credit card if you shop often. Cardholders get 5% off purchases at Academy, free shipping with no minimum and $30 off a first card purchase of $30.01 or more, subject to credit approval.
8. Pick up for free. Free 1-hour in-store and curbside pickup avoids shipping costs entirely, which helps on heavy items that may not qualify for free shipping.
9. Hit $500 a year for a bonus. Members get a $25 reward after $500 in annual spending at Academy.

Shipping & delivery options

As of September 2026, Academy’s shipping and returns page lists these free shipping thresholds for standard shipping:

• $25+ when you are signed in to myAcademy Rewards.
• $50+ without signing in.
• No minimum for myAcademy Rewards credit cardholders.

Free shipping excludes firearms and ammunition and select large or heavy items, and the page notes shipping limitations for some destinations. Expedited 2-day and 1-day shipping are available at checkout for an extra fee. Academy also offers free 1-hour in-store pickup and curbside pickup, plus same-day delivery powered by DoorDash in eligible areas.

Return & exchange policy

Academy accepts returns of most unused, new-condition items within 60 days of purchase, and in-store returns are free. Online orders can be returned to a store or by mail. Refunds go to the original form of payment, and cash refunds require the original receipt. Without a receipt, you need valid ID and will receive merchandise credit, and Academy reserves the right to limit returns.

Several categories cannot be returned, including firearms and ammunition, gift cards and a range of other items listed on the return policy page. Check that list before buying outdoor gear, electronics or bikes.

myAcademy Rewards explained

myAcademy Rewards is free to join. As of September 2026, members get:

• $15 off after you join.
• A $15 off birthday reward during your birthday month.
• A $25 reward after $500 in annual spend at Academy.
• Free shipping on orders of $25 or more.
• Personalized offers, deals and faster checkout on the app and website.

The myAcademy Rewards credit card and Mastercard add 5% off purchases at Academy, free shipping with no minimum and $30 off your first card purchase of $30.01 or more. The Mastercard also earns 2% back outside Academy and a $50 reward after $500 spent outside Academy within 90 days of opening. There is no annual fee, according to the credit card page.

Student, military, teacher & other discounts

We did not find a military, student, teacher or first responder discount program published on academy.com during our September 2026 review. Ask at your local store in case a store-level program applies. The best standing discounts are myAcademy Rewards, the credit card’s 5% off and the price match guarantee.

Price matching & price adjustments

Academy’s price match guarantee beats a qualifying competitor’s current price by 5% on identical, in-stock items (same brand and model number). Local printed ads qualify in store. Price matching excludes misprints, clearance, closeouts, BOGO offers, timed events, rebates, coupons, membership-only prices and limited-quantity offers, and it is applied before tax. Items purchased within 14 days of your receipt date may also be eligible for a price adjustment.

Payment options

Academy accepts the myAcademy Rewards credit cards, gift cards, Apple Pay, Klarna and Sezzle, which its return policy references for refunds. Other card options are shown at checkout.

When Academy has its biggest sales

• Brand months and features: like Brooks Month in September 2026.
• Hunting season lead-up: late summer and early fall bring deals on game cameras, blinds, stands and optics.
• Back to school: July and August for shoes, backpacks and sports gear.
• Black Friday and the holidays: historically Academy’s biggest sale window, especially on grills, fitness equipment and outdoor gear.
• Your birthday month: the $15 myAcademy reward.
