The biggest savings come from its membership programs and its rotating book sales rather than from promo codes. This guide covers how each program works as of September 2026.

Best ways to save at Barnes & Noble

• Shop the 50% off book collections. B&N regularly runs half-price sections for adult and kids' titles, and its Book Haul events offer 50% off hundreds of titles to members and non-members alike.
• Check the coupons and deals page. It gathers current promotions such as discounts on hardcover bestsellers, select paperbacks, gifts, puzzles, games and music.
• Browse clearance and bargain books. Clearance items are marked down by up to 50%, and the Book Annex bargain section carries discounted hardcovers and paperbacks.
• Join Rewards for free. Even if you never pay for Premium, you earn stamps toward $5 rewards on every eligible purchase.
• Consider Premium if you buy often. The 10% everyday discount plus $15 free shipping threshold can pay back the $39.99 fee after about $400 of full-price purchases.

Shipping

As of September 2026, bn.com offers free standard shipping on orders of $60 or more. Premium members (and legacy members) get free standard shipping on eligible orders of $15 or more, calculated before tax and after discounts, with delivery typically in 3 to 6 business days. Members must be logged in with the email tied to their membership. Gift cards, magazines, digital products, memberships and oversized items do not count toward the free shipping benefit. You can also buy online and pick up in a Barnes & Noble store.

Returns

Barnes & Noble accepts returns of new, unread merchandise within 30 days. For in-store purchases, bring your store sales receipt to any Barnes & Noble location. For bn.com orders, you can return in store with your packing slip or order confirmation email, or mail the item to the company's returns center. When you ship a return yourself, you pay the postage, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Gifts with a gift receipt can be exchanged for a Barnes & Noble gift card for the purchase price within 60 days. Opened shrink-wrapped items, magazines, newspapers, used books, digital content, gift cards, memberships and bulk orders of 50 or more copies are not returnable.

Rewards and Premium Membership

Barnes & Noble has two tiers. Rewards membership is free: you earn one stamp for every $10 spent on eligible items in a single transaction, and every 10 stamps converts into a $5 reward. Stamps expire after 12 months of account inactivity, and it works at Barnes & Noble and Paper Source stores and on bn.com.

Premium Membership costs $39.99 per year. It includes all Rewards benefits plus a 10% everyday discount on almost everything, free standard shipping on orders of $15 or more, free drink size upgrades in B&N Cafés, a free tote bag each year, members-only offers and birthday treats for children 12 and under. The member discount does not apply to eBooks.

Special discounts

Barnes & Noble offers Premium Membership for Educators, which gives eligible K-12 teachers, librarians, counselors, principals and reading coaches at accredited public, private or parochial schools a free year of Premium benefits (without the tote bag). Enrollment happens in store only. Homeschool, higher education, substitute, student and retired teachers are not eligible. B&N does not publish a student or military discount on bn.com as of September 2026.

B&N Mastercard

The Barnes & Noble Mastercard earns 5% cash back on Barnes & Noble and Paper Source purchases and, according to B&N's membership page, comes with a $25 gift card after your first purchase and a complimentary year of Premium Membership with qualifying spending. As with any store card, it only saves money if you pay the balance in full.

Price match

Barnes & Noble does not price match. Its help center states that it does not honor requests to match competitors' prices on individual products, and it does not adjust the price of existing orders. Prices on bn.com and in stores can also differ.

Payment options

Online, bn.com accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, JCB, corporate purchasing cards, PayPal, Shop Pay, and Barnes & Noble gift cards and eGift cards. Only one credit card can be used per online order, though gift cards can be combined with it. Stores also accept cash, debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Sale calendar

Barnes & Noble runs its Book Haul sale events a few times a year, with 50% off hundreds of titles; dates are announced on the Book Haul page. Half-price book sections, collectible edition promotions and category sales on toys, games and gifts rotate throughout the year, and holiday gift promotions ramp up in November and December.
