Duolingo shopping guide: how to save more

Duolingo at a glance

Duolingo is the popular learning app known for short, game-like lessons and its green owl mascot, Duo. The biggest way to save on Duolingo is simple: the core courses are free. If you want an ad-free experience or extra features, Duolingo sells Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max subscriptions, and the Family Plan lets several people share one subscription. Duolingo also runs an official merchandise store with free shipping on eligible orders. This guide covers each of these options based on what Duolingo publishes on its own sites.

Best ways to save at Duolingo

• Start with the free version. Duolingo says everyone can access its courses without spending anything, whether you take one course or many. You only pay if you want premium features.
• Try Super before paying. Duolingo has offered a free trial of Super Duolingo before the paid subscription starts. Check the app for the trial currently available to your account.
• Share a Family Plan. The Family Plan lets you share all the benefits of Super Duolingo with up to 5 other people, which usually costs far less per person than separate subscriptions.
• Get free shipping on merch. The official Duolingo store applies free standard shipping automatically at checkout on eligible orders to the US, Canada and select Latin American countries.
• Spend $50 for a free pin. The store currently advertises a free mystery Duo pin when you spend $50 on eligible items.

Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max

Super Duolingo is the main paid tier. Duolingo lists its benefits as an ad-free experience, Unlimited Hearts so mistakes do not stop your lesson, a progress tracker and monthly Streak Repair, among other features. Duolingo Max sits above Super and adds AI-powered tools, including roleplay scenarios and extra grammar explanations.

Pricing for Super and Max is shown in the app and on the Duolingo website and can differ by country, platform and billing period, so we have not listed specific prices here. Annual billing is commonly cheaper per month than monthly billing for subscription apps, but compare the options shown at checkout for your account. If you subscribe through the Apple App Store or Google Play, billing and cancellation run through that store.

Free trial

When Super Duolingo launched, Duolingo said learners could try Super free for 2 weeks before the subscription started. Trial offers can change, so as of October 2026 we recommend checking the trial length shown in the app before you start one. Set a reminder to cancel before the trial ends if you decide not to keep the subscription, since it converts to a paid plan automatically. Duolingo’s Help Center explains how to cancel a Super subscription on each platform.

Family Plan

The Duolingo Family Plan lets one subscriber share all the benefits of Super Duolingo with 5 family members or friends, for 6 learners in total. Each person keeps their own profile, courses and streaks. If two or more people in your household would otherwise pay for separate Super subscriptions, the Family Plan is usually the most cost-effective way to go premium. The plan owner manages the members and the billing.

Official Duolingo store

Duolingo’s merchandise store at store.duolingo.com sells plushies of Duo and other characters, apparel, mugs, keychains, a chess set and other accessories. Prices on the store range from small accessories to larger collector items, and popular plushies sometimes sell out.

• Shipping: Free standard shipping is applied automatically at checkout for eligible orders shipping to the US, Canada and select Latin American countries. Orders typically ship within 3 to 6 business days, and tracking is sent by email.
• Gift with purchase: Spend $50 on eligible items to get a free mystery Duo pin. The Loog x Duolingo Piano is excluded.
• Payment: The store accepts major credit cards, Shop Pay and Google Pay.

Returns and refunds

For the merch store, unused accessories and apparel can be returned within 30 days after delivery. Apparel must be unworn, unwashed, undamaged and unused, with all original tags and packaging, and can be exchanged for another size or color or refunded. The customer covers return and exchange shipping costs, and those shipping charges are not refundable.

For app subscriptions, refunds depend on where you bought the subscription. Purchases made through the Apple App Store or Google Play follow those stores’ refund processes. Check the Duolingo Help Center for current guidance on your platform.

Special discounts

We could not confirm a student, military or teacher discount on Super Duolingo on the official Duolingo website as of October 2026. Since the full course content is free, many learners never need a paid plan at all. Duolingo does occasionally show discounted subscription offers inside the app, so check the shop or subscription screen in your account.

Sale calendar

Duolingo does not publish a regular sale calendar for subscriptions. Discounted offers, when they appear, are usually shown inside the app to eligible users. The merch store runs its own promotions, such as the current free mystery Duo pin with a $50 purchase, and new product drops appear on the store homepage.

How to use a promo code at Duolingo

1. For the merch store, add items to your cart at store.duolingo.com and go to checkout.
2. If you have a discount code from Duolingo, enter it in the discount code field at checkout before paying. Free shipping on eligible orders applies automatically.
3. For subscriptions, open the Duolingo app or website, go to the Super or Max subscription screen, and review any offer shown for your account. Subscription discounts are typically applied automatically rather than through a typed code.
4. Review the final price and billing period before confirming.

Final tips

Use the free version until you know you will stick with daily practice, take advantage of a free trial to test Super, and split a Family Plan with friends or family if more than one person will use premium features. For merch, aim for the $50 threshold to earn the free pin.
