How to save at Hotels.com: the smartest ways

Hotels.com prices change daily, and the biggest savings usually come from combining member pricing, flexible rates and the Price Guarantee. As of September 2026, these tactics work best for US travelers:

1. Sign in before you search. Joining One Key is free, and signed-in members see Member Prices, which start at about 10% off at participating hotels. Silver, Gold and Platinum members get deeper Member Prices on select properties.
2. Book refundable, then keep checking. If the price drops before your free-cancellation deadline, you can cancel and rebook at the lower rate.
3. Use the Price Guarantee. If you find the same room, at the same property, for the same dates for less elsewhere, you can claim the difference up until the day before check-in.
4. Look for VIP Access properties. Members with status earn extra OneKeyCash at these hotels.
5. Spend OneKeyCash on the next trip. Rewards you earn on hotels can be applied to eligible bookings on Hotels.com and Expedia.
6. Compare the total price, not the nightly rate. Turn on the total-price view and check taxes, resort fees and parking before you pick a hotel.
7. Be flexible on dates. Shifting check-in by a day, or choosing a Sunday-night stay in leisure cities, can noticeably lower the total.

Booking, fees & payment timing

Hotels.com doesn't ship anything, so "shipping" here means how and when you pay. Depending on the property, you'll usually see:

• Pay now: Hotels.com charges your card when you book.
• Pay at property: the hotel charges you, often at check-in or checkout. With this option, a Price Guarantee refund may be issued after your stay.
• Property-collected fees: resort fees, city taxes, deposits and parking may be collected by the hotel on top of your booking. Check the fee section in the listing.

Confirmation arrives by email and appears in the app under Trips, where you can also manage changes.

Cancellation & change policy

Each booking's cancellation rules come from the property and the rate you chose. Here's how they typically work:

• Refundable rates: you can cancel free until the deadline shown in your itinerary. That deadline is often one to three days before check-in, but it varies.
• Nonrefundable rates: these are usually cheaper, but you normally won't get money back if you cancel.
• Changes: changing dates or rooms may work like a cancel-and-rebook at the current price.

Refunds go back to your original payment method. Depending on your bank, they can take several business days (and occasionally up to about 30 days) to appear.

One Key rewards explained

In the US, Hotels.com uses One Key, the shared Expedia Group loyalty program. (Hotels.com brought back its classic Hotels.com Rewards in the UK, Canada and parts of Europe in 2026, but at the time of review US members were still on One Key.)

• Earning: you earn OneKeyCash worth about 2% on eligible hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals and activities, and a much lower rate on flights. Status members can earn more at VIP Access properties.
• Tiers: status is based on "trip elements" (each hotel night counts). Blue is 0-4, Silver is 5-14, Gold is 15-29 and Platinum is 30 or more per year.
• Member Prices: about 10% or more off for Blue, 15% or more for Silver on select hotels, and 20% or more for Gold and Platinum.
• Expiration: OneKeyCash stays active as long as you make an eligible booking or redeem rewards at least once every 18 months.
• Credit card: the One Key card has no annual fee and earns OneKeyCash on everyday spending.

Student, military, teacher, senior & other discounts

As of September 2026, Hotels.com doesn't offer an official student, military, teacher or senior discount program. For savings, your best options are Member Prices and the extra discounts that come with higher One Key tiers. Some hotels offer government or AARP rates directly, but those rates are excluded from the Hotels.com Price Guarantee.

Price matching & price adjustments

The Hotels.com Price Guarantee covers the same room type at the same property for the same dates. Key rules:

• You can claim until the day before check-in. Claims made on the day of check-in aren't accepted.
• On refundable bookings, you get the difference back. On nonrefundable bookings, the difference is issued as a coupon for a future booking.
• Excluded: government and AARP rates, "blind" bookings where the hotel is revealed after you pay, other sites' loyalty-member-only rates, package deals, and prices that aren't available to the general public.

Hotels.com's own Member Prices are eligible for the guarantee.

Payment options

Hotels.com accepts major credit and debit cards. It also offers Affirm pay-over-time plans at checkout on eligible US bookings, a partnership announced in 2024. You can use Hotels.com gift cards and OneKeyCash toward eligible stays. Available options vary by property and by whether you pay now or at the property.

When Hotels.com has its biggest sales

• January-February: travel companies often run "plan your year" sales on spring and summer trips.
• Late spring: summer travel promotions often appear before peak season.
• Black Friday and Cyber Monday: usually the biggest limited-time hotel discounts of the year.
• Last-minute deals: hotels with empty rooms sometimes cut prices close to the date, especially midweek.
