JCPenney shopping guide: how to save more

JCPenney at a glance

Best ways to save at JCPenney

• Join JCPenney Rewards. It is free, and every 200 points automatically turns into a $10 CashPass Reward you can use on a later purchase.
• Shop the clearance section. JCPenney advertises clearance markdowns of up to 60% to 75% off clothing, shoes, furniture and more while supplies last, with filters for items under $5, $10, $15 and $20.
• Plan orders around the $49 free shipping line. If you are a little short, choosing free store pickup (on orders over $25) is often cheaper than paying for standard delivery.
• Check the Weekly Ad. Current storewide sales and coupons are published in the JCPenney Weekly Ad and on the coupons page.
• Use the price guarantee. If you find the identical item cheaper at another retailer, JCPenney will match it under its published rules.

Shipping

Standard delivery takes about 3 to 5 business days and is free on orders of $49 or more. Below that, standard shipping is $8.95. VIP members of the rewards program get free standard shipping starting at $25. Expedited options with 1 to 3 business day delivery are available for an extra charge that ranges from about $14.95 to $45 depending on speed and order total. Large or heavy items, such as furniture, can carry surcharges.

Store delivery is the other option. It is free on orders over $25 and $3.95 otherwise. Most pickup orders are ready in 4 to 7 business days, and JCPenney holds them for up to 10 days before canceling and refunding the order.

Returns

Most items can be returned or exchanged within 60 days of purchase. Returning to any JCPenney store is free and is the fastest route. Online orders can also be returned by mail through your account, but a flat $8 return shipping fee is deducted from the refund, and credits can take up to four weeks to process.

A receipt is required for most returns. Without one, you may get a merchandise voucher for the item's lowest price over the prior 45 days, with valid ID. Gift cards, monogrammed or altered items, body jewelry, perishable food and services are not returnable. Special occasion dresses and men's tuxedos need original tags attached. Items from third-party marketplace sellers have a 30-day window.

JCPenney Rewards program

JCPenney Rewards is free to join. Members earn 1 point per dollar on qualifying purchases with most payment methods, and JCPenney credit cardholders earn more (1.5 to 2 points per dollar, up to 2,000 points per transaction). Every 200 points generates a $10 CashPass Reward, and there is no cap on how many you can earn. Rewards expire in a minimum of 45 days, so check the date printed on each one.

As of September 2026 the program has four tiers based on yearly spending: Member, Insider ($100 or more, or credit cardholders), Elite ($300 or more) and VIP ($1,000 or more plus a JCPenney credit card). Eligible members also receive a $10 CashPass Reward in their birthday month if they have made qualifying activity in the past 12 months. Some brands and categories are excluded from reward redemption, and JCPenney lists them on its rewards exclusions page.

JCPenney credit card

New JCPenney credit card accounts get 15% off the first purchase, according to the retailer's coupons page. Cardholders earn more rewards points per dollar and can reach the VIP tier, which lowers the free shipping minimum. Only apply if you plan to pay the balance in full, since store card interest can outweigh the savings.

Special discounts

JCPenney does not publish a student, military, teacher or first responder discount on its website as of September 2026. The best everyday savings for these groups are the same as for everyone else: rewards, clearance and sale events.

Price match

JCPenney has a Lowest Price Guarantee. It matches any retailer's in-store and online price on an identical item (same brand, style, color, size and model number), including items sold by Amazon.com itself. You need to show the competitor's ad, and you can ask for an adjustment within 14 days after purchase. It does not cover marketplace or third-party sellers, clearance or closeout prices, open-box items, membership-only or credit-card-only pricing, bundles or free offers. It applies in the continental U.S. only, and JCPenney also gives a one-time in-store sale adjustment within 14 days with the original receipt.

Payment options

JCPenney accepts its own credit card, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover, plus PayPal online for U.S. addresses and JCPenney gift cards and e-gift cards. Synchrony Pay Later is offered on fine jewelry purchases of $300 or more, subject to approval.

Sale calendar

JCPenney runs rotating weekly promotions through its Weekly Ad and holds major events around holidays, including Black Friday; its price guarantee specifically notes that it applies on Black Friday too.
