PlayStation shopping guide: how to save more

PlayStation Direct at a glance

PlayStation Direct is Sony’s own online store for PlayStation hardware and accessories in the US. It is often the first place new consoles, limited edition controllers and exclusive bundles go on sale, and it also sells certified refurbished consoles. Because Sony sets the prices, the biggest savings usually come from programs such as trade-ins, refurbished hardware and promotional events rather than from codes.

Best ways to save at PlayStation Direct

• Trade in an old PS4. The trade-in program with Back Market pays you for your PS4 and adds a $50 voucher for a new PS5, PS5 Pro or PS VR2 on PlayStation Direct.
• Consider a certified refurbished console. Sony sells certified refurbished PS5 models that cost less than new ones, with savings of up to $100 shown on the deals page when we checked.
• Check the deals page. The deals page lists limited-time price cuts when they run. As of early October 2026 it said there were no ongoing deals, so check back around big sales events.
• Keep your order over $40. Standard delivery is free above that amount, so adding a game or accessory to a small order can cancel out the shipping charge.
• Use PlayStation Plus perks. PS Plus members get some exclusive products, early access offers and free express delivery on a console when another item is in the cart.

Shipping at PlayStation Direct

As of October 2026, the delivery and tracking page lists free standard delivery on orders over $40, with conditions. Standard delivery takes about four business days. PlayStation Plus members can get complimentary express delivery, about two to three business days, when they buy a console together with at least one game or accessory. Orders are processed Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays, and hardware deliveries need a signature. PlayStation Direct ships within the US but not to P.O. boxes or US territories. Military and diplomatic addresses can take 30 to 40 days, and refurbished products cannot ship to those addresses. Alaska, Hawaii and some areas may take an extra business day or two. Pre-orders are delivered on launch day when stock and shipping allow.

Returns and refunds

The returns and refund policy gives you 30 days from the date your item ships to start a return, and PlayStation Direct provides a prepaid FedEx label. Items must come back in original condition with all cords, accessories and documentation. Physical disc games must be unopened with seals intact. Digital games, codes and content, opened disc games, custom orders, subscription products and anything marked final sale, clearance or as-is cannot be returned. Refunds go back to your original payment method, usually at least seven business days after the return is accepted. Hardware and accessories also carry a limited one-year warranty.

Trade-in and upgrade offers

The trade-in program is run with Back Market, a marketplace for professionally refurbished electronics. You get a quote for your PS4 based on model, condition and storage, ship it for free, and receive a cash payment plus a $50 voucher code. The voucher can be used once on a PS5 or PS5 Pro console, console bundle or PS VR2 bought on PlayStation Direct. It cannot be combined with other offers or used on pre-orders, and the program is for US residents only. The site lists a final voucher redemption date of October 31, 2026, and individual vouchers may expire sooner, so check your confirmation email. Sony also runs occasional invitation-only upgrade offers for PlayStation account holders who opt in to marketing emails, with terms posted on playstation.com when they are active.

Certified refurbished consoles

PlayStation Direct sells certified refurbished PS5 consoles, including the slim digital edition. These are inspected by Sony and sold at a lower price than new hardware. If you want a PS5 and do not need a brand-new box, this is one of the most reliable ways to pay less directly from Sony. Stock comes and goes, so availability can change quickly.

PlayStation credit card and payment options

PlayStation Direct accepts major credit and debit cards. Klarna lets you split a purchase into four interest-free payments, and longer financing plans may be shown on some consoles. The PlayStation Visa credit card earns points toward PlayStation purchases, and as of October 2026 the store advertises a $100 statement credit for new cardholders who spend $500 in the first 60 days. Card approval, rates and terms are set by the issuing bank, so read the full terms before applying.

Special discounts

We could not confirm a student, military, teacher or first responder discount on PlayStation Direct as of October 2026. PlayStation Plus membership is the main group that gets special treatment, through member-only products, early access offers and free express console delivery.

Price match

We did not find a price match policy on PlayStation Direct. Prices are set by Sony and tend to match the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, so price drops usually show up during official sale events rather than through price matching.

Sale calendar

PlayStation runs its own promotional events during the year, such as Days of Play and holiday deals, and hardware discounts on PlayStation Direct usually line up with those events. Because the deals page was empty when we checked, we cannot list current sale dates. The best approach is to watch the deals page and PlayStation emails in the weeks before major shopping holidays.

How to use a promo code or voucher at PlayStation Direct

1. Sign in with your PlayStation account at direct.playstation.com.
2. Add the eligible console, accessory or game to your cart.
3. Go to checkout and look for the promo code or voucher field.
4. Enter the code you received from PlayStation, such as a trade-in voucher, and apply it.
5. Check that the discount appears in your order total before you place the order. Vouchers only work on eligible items and cannot be combined with other offers.
