How to save at U-Haul: the smartest ways
Pair a one-way rental with storage. A one-way truck or trailer rental can unlock one month of free base storage rent at participating U-Haul-owned storage locations.
Pick in-town for short moves. For local moves you pay a base rate plus mileage, so keeping the route short and making fewer trips keeps the bill down.
Right-size the truck. U-Haul rents pickups, cargo vans and 10, 15, 20, 26 and 29 foot trucks. A smaller vehicle carries a lower base rate, but a truck that is too small can mean extra trips and more miles.
Refuel before you return. U-Haul asks you to bring the truck back with the same fuel level it had at pickup, so topping up yourself avoids refueling charges.
Stay within included miles on one-way trips. Miles over your one-way allowance are billed at $1.00 per mile.
Buy boxes without worry. Unused U-Haul boxes can be sold back with a receipt at any U-Haul center.
Get free used boxes. The U-Haul Customer Connect exchange lets customers give away and pick up used boxes.
Order supplies online above $50. Standard shipping is free on US supply orders of $50 or more.
Skip the storage deposit. Participating storage locations charge no deposit or admin fee to start.
Use partner hotel rates. U-Haul lists partner hotel discounts, including 15% at Choice Hotels and Motel 6/Studio 6 and 10% at Wyndham, for stays on the road.
How U-Haul pricing works
U-Haul prices in-town and one-way moves differently. In-town rentals, where you return the equipment to the same location, are priced as a base rate plus a per-mile charge. U-Haul advertises trucks starting at $19.95 for in-town rentals, and a U-Haul pricing example shows a 15 foot truck at $29.95 plus $0.99 per mile. Exact rates depend on location, date and truck size, so check when you book.
One-way rentals use a flat rate that already includes a set number of miles and days for your route, based on distance and drop-off location. If you exceed the included miles, extra miles cost $1.00 each. Fuel is not included in either type; return the truck with the same amount of fuel it had at pickup.
Booking changes & cancellation
U-Haul asks customers to cancel by the day before the move date. You can change a reservation online or by contacting your local U-Haul representative. Because U-Haul notes that rental rates can change at any time, confirm your reservation promptly once your plans are set. Returning after hours through the app self-return is available; if you want staff to verify an after-hours return, U-Haul charges a $20 convenience fee.
Damage protection & coverage options
U-Haul offers two optional coverage packages. Safemove includes a damage waiver for most accident damage to the rental equipment (including overhead and tire damage, with deductibles that can apply), cargo protection for loss or damage from collision, fire, windstorm and overturn, and medical and life protection for people in the cab. Safemove Plus adds supplemental liability coverage for the first one million dollars of losses and a $0 deductible on accidental damage to the truck. Safemove Plus is not available on pickups or vans or in some states, including New York, New Jersey, Nevada, Louisiana and Connecticut. Prices are shown at booking.
Moving supplies & add-ons
U-Haul sells boxes, tape, padding and other supplies in stores and online, with free standard shipping on US orders of $50 or more. Unused boxes can be sold back with a receipt, and free used boxes are available through the Customer Connect exchange. Other add-ons include trailers, towing equipment and hitch installation (with a free towing inspection at hitch installation locations), U-Box containers, self-storage and Moving Help labor.
Military, AAA, student & other discounts
U-Haul states it does not have an official military discount, but its Military Move program offers one month of free storage at destination with a one-way rental, one month of free storage with a DD Form 2278, free standard shipping on supplies, and free weight tickets with U-Box delivery. There is no AAA discount listed on the U-Haul discounts page. Students can save up to 40% on shipping through U-Haul's Collegeboxes service. Business customers can ask about long-term daily, weekly and monthly rates.
Payment options
Online reservations require an American Express, Discover, Mastercard or Visa card.
Debit cards with a Visa or Mastercard logo can be used to rent equipment.
Cash is accepted at return; cash renters pay a deposit of $100 or the estimated charges (whichever is greater) for in-town trucks.
Pickups and cargo vans require a major credit card or debit card with a major card logo at pickup.
Renters must be 18 to rent a truck and 16 to rent a trailer.
Cheapest times to move
U-Haul does not publish a seasonal price calendar, and its rates can change at any time. Compare a few pickup dates in the online quote tool before you commit, and lock in the rate you like by confirming your reservation early. For short local moves, the biggest savings come from minimizing miles, since in-town pricing adds a charge for every mile driven.
How to use a U-Haul promo code or discount
U-Haul does not publish promo codes, so there is nothing to type at checkout. To claim the free storage month, reserve your one-way truck or trailer first, then reserve storage at a participating location and provide your equipment contract number online, by phone at 1-800-GO-U-HAUL or in person. Military families should bring their DD Form 2278 to a participating storage location. Free shipping applies automatically to qualifying supply orders. See the full list on the U-Haul discounts page.
